Sofies: why we joined CEWASTE project?

Sofies is an international, B-Corp certified, sustainability consulting and management firm. Created in 2008 as a result of the combination of the experience, technical skills and networks of its founding partners, Sofies provides innovative solutions to improve the environmental, social and economic performance of its customers’ activities. Sofies group, headquartered in Geneva has branches also in Zurich, UK and India.

We have been extensively working over the last decade on various projects aiming at closing the loop on waste from electronic products and batteries not only across Europe but also on the ground in developing countries. Once the call was out, we immediately realised it was a unique opportunity to team up with some of the key partners we have been working with in the past and try to develop and roll-out a new voluntary standard aiming at maximising the recovery of Critical Raw Materials along the recycling chain.

Well aware of the operational but especially economic challenges that are currently hampering the recovery of CRMs, we are working with consortium partners to develop innovative ideas ensuring the sustainability of the scheme. Historically involved in auditing activities, we lead the CEWASTE piloting activities on the ground by organising and coordinating pilot audits in Europe as well as in Colombia, Rwanda and Turkey (read more here). We are convinced that it will be important in the near future for CRM recovery to become a reality, not only in Europe but also beyond, given the global dimension of supply chains.
